But it tastes great. i doubled it, so i used two cans of coconut milk and a cup of homemade veg broth.

One question I have is that mine has much less liquid than yours – how does yours (in the pictures) seem to have so much sauce?

After reading some comments saying that the cooking time for the lentils took much longer, I decided to soak them for an hour first. My mom used to cook Dal almost every alternate day and used to serve it in a full bowl with rice or bread and other veggies.  But I use to consume only as much Dal as needed to finish my diet.

I used pre-cooked lentils to speed up the process but then just left the pot on a low simmer for a couple hours to let the flavors really meld. Nice to see Dal recipe too on your blog. Dals you can always freeze:) I usually make batches of black lentils dal and freeze it forever :) but being a North Indian we never add coconut milk to dals.

Once the lentils are tender, taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding more lemon juice for acidity, cayenne for heat (optional), curry powder or paste for more intense curry flavor, salt for saltiness, or coconut sugar or maple syrup for sweetness.

This recipe is typically made using whole urad dal or black gram that can be found in most Indian supermarkets and online.
